Designing the Future

Today I just learned of the Venus Project, a scientific approach to redesigning world culture to be more accommodating of all people and centered around our planet's resources in a more positive and peaceful way. It appears that Jacque Fresco is one of the main visionaries behind this project and his space age artwork serves as models for expressing these ideas and theories. The project is based out of Venus, Florida and Jacque has a new film out called "Future by Design."

E.T.

I took the above photo a few days ago while skiing some back-country in Stanley, Idaho. At first glance this photo may appear to be unrelated to anything space age, but pictured is a run we skied on Copper Mountain that is named "E.T." for it's extra-terrestrial like snow features. I was with my friend Erich Hamm, Kirk Bachman, and the dogs Gracie and Buster. We hiked up the ridge along the left side of the photo to that notch of trees in the center, and before we skied back down to the bottom the guys advised me to "watch out for those E.T.'s." It was an awesome run with powder that was fast and deep. All E.T.'s present that day were safely avoided.

This video is dedicated to Hamm and Gracie.

Spanish Teens Send Handmade Spacecraft To The Edge Of Space And Take Pictures!

Eddie just sent me a link to this amazing story of four teenage students in Spain who recently sent a camera 20 miles up into the Stratosphere to take photos. The images are beautiful and can be seen on their Flickr page. The four students of the Meteotek team of IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, Gerard Marull Paretas, Sergi Saballs Vila, Marta Gasull Morcillo and Jaume Puigmiquel Casamort, used guidance sensors linked in with Google Earth to track the balloon that carried their hand built equipment.

Captain Galactic

Sunday I went to UnionDocs to hear some radio stories done by students from the Salt Institute. We heard four compelling documentaries, all stories that took place in Maine, where Salt is located. While it wasn't featured on Sunday, Salt student Josie Holtzman did a great piece this fall about space enthusiast Steve LeVerdiere aka "Captain Galactic." Steve grew up through the space age and has always dreamed of being an astronaut, so when Virgin Galactic first made their $200,000 tickets available to the public he was one of the first people to sign up, and now it looks like he may be the first native Mainer to ever fly into outerspace. You can hear Steve tell his story here on the Salt website, it's less than 8 minutes long and very well done. Goodluck Captain Galactic!!!

Robot Evolution

While I was messing around building this guy out of an old Erector Set recently, robots were continuing to evolve to more impressive levels of capability. Check out this series of 32 photos posted on the Boston Globe website yesterday. Some of my favorites include this rickshaw robot, a bartender, a Toyota brass band, and a shot of the Terminator himself reacting to a big robot arm at a tech fair.
